Into the second week of Richard Crossland’s Pennine Way challenge for cancer charities and Richard, centre, and his co-walker Brian Windle, left, are now over half way and for some of the time their photographer has been his daughter Helen, right.

The week has seen them tackle extremes of weather, with day seven seeing them negotiate Fountain’s Head and Pen-Y-Ghent in gale force winds and icy rain. Two days in the sun followed and they spent some time at Tan Hill Inn, Britain’s highest - though Richard and Brian weren’t as impressed with the prices as they were with the ale!

Reflection on his life and work

At their May monthly meeting, members of the Todmorden Ladies Probus club were given a fascinating insight into the life of Percy Shaw by guest speaker Mr John Hargreaves.

Percy Shaw, inventor of the “cats eye” reflective road stud was born in Halifax in 1890 and came from humble origins. He left school at 13 and received no scientific education but by the 1960s his invention was described in parliament as “the most brilliant in the interest of road safety”.

By his death in 1976 the studs marked traffic lanes of roads all over the world.

Young visitors all see a lamb being born at farm

More than 150 visitors flocked to Ramsden Farm during this spring’s lambing season.

Pupils from across Calderdale came to Ramsden, at Walsden, to see new lambs and learn all about the care of sheep and their new-born lambs. All the visitors were lucky enough to actually see a birth.

Visitors enjoyed short talks and demonstrations on many aspects of sheep management. They watched demonstrations of marking and docking, foot trimming, feeding the adult animals as well as helping reluctant lambs to take their first feed.

Due to the cold weather breeding cattle were inside, giving visitors a chance to get close to the animals and some helped with the feeding.

Visitors went on a farm walk and were able to find out about the Twite. Ramsden Farm has a range of environmental schemes to help protect this small, endangered bird.

Children from Shade School, Todmorden, had a busy morning in the lambing shed and then walked down to the wetland area in search of other new life on the farm. They found lots of tiny creatures that live in the water as well as lots of frog-spawn.

The facilities at Ramsden have been sponsored by Natural England as part of a scheme to encourage children into the countryside, to raise their awareness of where food comes from. Due to this sponsorship all visits are, to the school, free of charge, and there is no limit on the number of visits any one school can make. Interested schools should contact Yvonne Howarth on 01706 813667 or email her at yhowarth@aol.com.

Sort out the yellow lines, council urged

Yellow lines are causing safety campaigners headaches in and around Todmorden.

At its last meeting Todmorden Accident Prevention Council campaigners heard they were having trouble getting parking restriction in place at a location they feel is causing a lot of concern, where in others there were not just double yellow lines but four of them!

This was hampering Calderdale Parking Services’ ability to effectively enforce parking restrictions, they said.

For some time members have been concerned about parked vehicles obstructing the view of drivers exiting Pexwood Road into Burnley Road. Recently traffic signals have been in place at the site and these caused additional problems.

Calderdale Parking Services have written to the council previously advising them that as there are no yellow line restrictions in the area, they were unable to deal with matters at the location.

Members agreed double yellow lines should be provided at the junction of Pexwood Road and Bacup Road and additionally on almost the entire length of the road from the Bacup Road junction with Rochdale Road to beyond the row of terraced homes beyond Pexwood Road towards Bacup on at least one side of the carriageway. They have written to Calderdale Highways asking them to give consideration to their request.

On another issue, members pointed out that yellow lines in parts of Todmorden were in urgent need of a repaint. Calderdale Parking Services’ yellow line painting machine had been in Todmorden recently but they felt a full check of all lines had not been carried out so that all lines would support a prosecution of any vehicle driver caught offending.

Secretary Mr Derrick Kershaw also pointed out that there were now four, almost parallel, lines across the entrance to Ferney Lee Old People’s Home on Ferney Lee Road and some of these lines required burning off.

The inability to enforce parking controls due to line errors was a constant cause of concern, members believed, and they have written to Calderdale Council about the matter.

The council next meets on Monday, June 18, at the Community Meeting Room at Todmorden Fire Station (7.15pm).

Rescue on the way for trapped - but relaxed, fed and watered - deer

People are being asked to stop calling Todmorden Police and the RSPCA about a deer which is marooned after jumping over a wall onto land bordered by the end of the town’s famous Great Wall and the waters of the Rochdale Canal.

PCSO Elayne Wright said the RSPCA had been alerted to the situation several days ago and will be moving the deer after tranquilising it, using a hoist, at some point as yet unspecified but soon. It was being fed and watered and is relaxed enough, RSPCA officers had told her.

“We are aware of the situation and the RSPCA are monitoring it, hoping it would swim off. It has been relaxed enough but they do need to get it out,” she said.

Changes at depot should address bus concerns, say First

Concerns expressed by safety campaigners about some bus movements at Todmorden depot are being addressed.

Members of Todmorden Accident Prevention Council are hopeful the situation will improve at the Halifax Road garage. They had written to operators First outlining concerns over buses reversing out of the garage onto the main Halifax Road.

Three representatives from First, headed by operations manager for First Bus Halifax, Hudersfield and Todmorden, Mr Khadim Hussain, met with members at the council’s annual meeting in the community room at Todmorden Fire Station, Stansfield Road. They told members that several of the concerns were already being addressed and improvements at the depot would ease access for drivers.

The work includes the filling in of two maintenance pits at the Eastwood end of the depot with concrete, increasing ease of access when drivers enter the depot with their vehicles and also leaving what was the old pit area.

There was also the likelihood that the arrangement for parking vehicles in the depot would be changed soon, a move also being made to improve access to the garage from Halifax Road.

A copy of written instruction was provided to council members who were told this had been given to all drivers.

Members hoped the situation would now improve and asked that any inappropriate vehicle movements should be reported at the earliest opportunity to council secretary Mr Derrick Kershaw, who would carry these forward to First with the aim of resolving matters should they arise. Members heard all First vehicles are fitted with GPS and cameras, and these could be used as evidence if this was required.

Council officers elected were: Chairman, Mr J. James; vice-chairman, Mr K. Lobley; secretary, Mr D. Kershaw. Mr David Hamer has also joined the council as a new member.

Richard Crossland is on course to complete his marathon walk of the Pennine Way at Kirk Yetholm in Northumberland on Friday, to raise money for cancer charities.

The past week has seen Todmorden Cricket Club stalwart Richard, who has battled cancer three times in as many years, and walking partner Brian Windle pass the 200-mile mark and head for the finish.

They have overcome Richard’s problem with sore feet solved by getting his special walking insoles to him, while Brian lost and found his wallet. They have also endured wet feet on a lengthy stretch of marshy grass and put in extra miles due to a navigational error. But they have also had some lovely weather, great views and landmarks like Thirwell Castle and Hadrian’s Wall.

Your cuppa will help eye hospital to fund its work

St John Fellowship members are hoping people will call in for a cuppa when they host a coffee morning this weekend.

The volunteers, many of whom put in years of service with the St John Ambulance service, will have their coffee pots at the ready between 10am and noon on Saturday, June 8, at Central Methodist Church, Bramsche Square, Todmorden.

It will benefit people of all races and religions who are treated at the St John Eye Hospital in Jerusalem, which has recently been able to increase the number of patients it treats.

Myra Bairstow, of the fellowship, said all money raised at the coffee morning, one of two held each year, would go to the eye hospital.

“It all goes directly to the eye hospital in Jerusalem, helping with the hospital expenses and prolonging treatment for all diseases of the eye.

“The hospital treats thousands of patients a year and children make up more than a quarter of that number,” she said.

The hospital plays a key role in ensuring that people suffering eye conditions can receive treatment whatever their race or religion, and patients attend from Gaza and the West Bank of Jerusalem.

Additionally, there is no cost to patients who could otherwise not afford to pay for their treatment.

Myra said: “There are doctors at the hospital from several different countries, including the United States of America and Britain.

“Also, outreach clinics have been operational for the past year or so, meaning many more patients have been able to be treated as these are easier to reach without going through checkpoints.

“People have supported us so well in the past, and we look forward to seeing you on Saturday morning.”

Last year the hospital treated more than 45,000 patients. You can find out more by logging on to www.stjohneyehospital.org
