Eroded road worries

Eroded ditches at the side of some of Todmorden’s hilltop roads are causing concern.

A resident said the flash flood in July had caused a lot of damage to the edges of the roadway.

The woman, who did not wish to be named, said the sides of Woodhouse Road - at its junction with Lumbutts Road - and Sourhall Road were badly eroded.

The damage was potentially undermining dry stone walls and creating traffic problems.

“The damage is bad enough to reduce the carriage width on a narrow country road so there isn’t enough room for two cars to pass. Cars pulling in risk being damaged if their wheels get caught in the eroded ditch,” she said.

Geoff Willerton, Calderdale Council’s head of planning and highways, said: “Calderdale Council seeks to ensure that the roads around the borough remain in a good condition.

“Following the floods in the Todmorden area last year, some damage occurred to Woodhouse Road. We intend to rebuild a dry stone wall, and make some repairs to the carriageway, and this work should take place next year.

“In order to carry out these works, it will be necessary to close Woodhouse Road. So as to minimise disruption both repairs will be carried out at the same time.”
