These young Todmorden lads were on their way east in 1953, en route on HMS Fowey, ultimately destined for the Korean conflict.

Standing from the left were Arnold Chadwick, Norman Barker and Roy Dale, and kneeling are Walter Savage, Allan Stuttard and another man whose name Allan, who sent in the photograph, cannot recall.

Setting sail from Southampton, they were at sea from January 23 to February 28. Allan, who was in the Duke of Wellington’s Regiment, said those on the picture were all aged around 18 and were army National Servicemen.

Some of them saw active service in the conflict and were in the country about five or six months, he recalled.
