A Hebden Bridge young poet will appear on national television this weekend as part of a programme based on West Yorkshire.
Poppy Turner, 21, will appear on the BBC One show Countryfile this Sunday at 7pm in a segment discussing the work of Huddersfield’s Simon Armitage, in particular the Stanza Stones Project, a series of rocks with Armitage’s verses written on them dotted over the moors from Ilkley to Marsden.
The episode was filmed around West Yorkshire and pays homage to the Calder Valley’s very own Cragg Vale Coiners.
Poppy was selected by the Calderdale Young Writers’ Group to be interviewed for the programme which will air on February 1.
The day was extra special for the young poet who also collected a £1,000 prize as the winner of the National Local Poem competition prize for her work ‘Learning to Love You (Ode to the Yorkshire Moors)’.
Poppy, who found the competition online, found inspiration in the Yorkshire moors, which she missed when she started university.
She said: “I wrote the poem when I began my studies at the Queen Mary University of London a couple of years ago.
“I was shocked when I was told I’d won the competition.”
As her prize, Poppy received a cheque and a framed certificate which were both presented to her at Hebden Bridge Library.
Julie Embury, Publications Executive of United Press, said: “In this annual competition, we aim to encourage people to get involved in expressing themselves through poetry by writing about someone or something from their home town.
“We feel that poems written from personal experience are the most heartfelt and compelling.”
